The Oral Health Project Coordinator is responsible for the overall planning and development of the SLFNHA Oral Health Program. The role of the Oral Health Project Coordinator is to gather community and steering committee input through an extensive engagement process and develop an implementation plan for the Oral Health Strategy, recognizing strict deadlines and ability to work within a recognized budget.

The Oral Health Project Coordinator is directly accountable to the Chief Operating Officer.

Applicants must possess

  • Two (2) years direct work experience in a project management capacity, program development, including all aspects of process development and execution;
  • Minimum Grade 12 and/or post-secondary education in a health services field or equivalent working experience.
  • Understanding of Indigenous health systems;
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment, collaborative environment;
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities;
  • Experience and understanding of Native culture, and the geographic realities and social conditions within remote Indigenous communities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (word processing and data entry in Excel specifically);
  • Must be willing to travel;
  • Background in dental/oral health or other health-related field would be an asset.
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) is an asset;
  • HARP certification is an asset;
  • Current CPR is an asset;
  • Certification in project management is an asset;
  • Graduation or Enrollment in the First Nations Health Managers Association certification program is an asset;


  • Support the ongoing implementation of the Oral Health Strategy.
  • Gather community and steering committee feedback on the Oral Health Strategy and input into an implementation plan.
  • Assists with organizing focus groups and key informant interviews.
  • Assists in the administering of questionnaires to study participants
  • Assists in the preparation and delivery of PowerPoint presentations to stakeholders.
  • Assists in the development of an implementation plan for the Oral Health Strategy.
  • Assists in the development of funding and transition proposals for oral health services.
  • Support the Chief Operating Officer in negotiations.
  • Support Tribal Councils and communities in planning and implementation of oral health programming, including conducting strategic planning sessions and coordinating relevant trainings.
  • Travel to communities to provide ongoing support for the implementation of oral health programming, including assistance with site assessments, developing partnerships with external stakeholders, consultants, as well as trouble shooting and providing options and direct assistance in all aspects of transitional service delivery models.
  • Support the implementation of data solutions for oral health programming that facilitate improved patient care and performance measurement.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of budget(s) associated with oral health programming.
  • Assist in the development of SLFNHA policies and procedures relating to oral health.
  • Liaise with key oral health stakeholders, including First Nations Inuit Health Branch, Sioux Lookout Zone Dental Program Chief Dental Officer, Children’s Oral Health Initiative Program, Health Unit(s), Chiefs of Ontario Dental Public Health Working Group, Ontario Dental Association, University of Manitoba, University of Toronto, and Confederation College.
  • Provide leadership through representation on various national and regional committees and working groups to ensure that Indigenous client’s interests and needs are represented in the development of policy and programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
