The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Specialist is responsible for the ongoing training and support for the Electronic Medical Records system. This will ensure that Sioux Lookout Regional Physician Services Inc. (SLRPSI) has a supported and sustainable EMR system in place which meets the needs of SLRPSI practitioners, staff and patients. The position is responsible for providing ongoing expert user support and training to all users.


  • Post-secondary education with a focus in computer programs/databases
  • Preferred 1-2 years’ work experience
  • Demonstrated training/teaching skills
  • Ability to create and maintain relevant and easy to understand training materials
  • Knowledge of records management techniques to administer patient records
  • Medical Terminology an asset
  • Knowledge of gathering, compiling and reporting statistical information
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills to convey messages effectively both verbal and written including the ability to explain technical issues in plain language
  • Proven knowledge and skills in the use of MS Operating systems (Microsoft Outlook, email, internet)
  • Ability to think analytically with well-developed problem solving skills
  • Proven time management skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-task team environment with a diverse group of medical professionals and support staff
  • Knowledge and understanding of confidentiality policies and procedures as they relate to all work in the office and levels of access to the EMR system


  • Provides expertise on the utilization of an electronic medical record database
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on the utilization of client documentation and reports by practitioners in a health care setting
  • Drafts and/or recommends changes to applicable policies and procedures
  • Provides expert knowledge as the point of contact for all EMR users
  • Provides initial and ongoing training and support to all key users
  • Provides hands on troubleshooting and problem solving for all users
  • Documents user problems and reports major issues to the vendor
  • Distributes information to practitioners and staff regarding reported problems
  • Develops internal training material
  • Ensures system use is maximized and implements supplementary training where required
  • Member of EMR working group
  • Research and implement approved innovative EMR practices for system users
  • Provides assistance where necessary
